Third day! At our morning meeting, Mr. Callens informed us of our three important dates, as well as the Friday cookouts and the trip to the Observatory on July 21st. Afterwards, we got free hot chocolate. Alexa and I stayed at the CIS center until 10:00 AM, reading our textbooks. Then we went to talk with our mentors, Kristina and Valerie, about out outreach programs. We finished the write-ups for the Spectroscopy and Planetary Model activities, while brainstorming other fun and informing activities.
At 11:45 AM, we went to the CIS building for lunch (pizza and popcorn) and a talk by Prof. Roger Easton. While eating pizza we were introduced to the majority of REU students. Prof. Easton's fascinating talk covered the imaging of ancient documents, for example the Archimedes Palimpset or a 1491 World Map.
After the lecture we spent the rest of the day working on our Outreach Project, starting write-ups for our own projects. Dr. Sargent talked with us about our research project which will start next week. One of the undergrad students, Matt Portman, is working on sorting images of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, which we will work on as well. In order to work the program, Alexa and I have to gain basic knowledge of Python and possibly IDL computer languages. As of now we have 2-3 outreach programs typed up.
